Henry Bermudez: Opening Reception & Artist Talk

Fri, 16 Jan 2026, 6:00 PM - Fri, 16 Jan 2026, 8:00 PM
Frances M. Maguire Art Museum

Join us for an evening celebrating Henry Bermudez’ new site-specific installation in the museum’s Great Hall, featuring a talk with the artist. Refreshments will be provided.

Bermudez' work will be on display January 16–December 13, 2026.

Henry Bermudez investigates how cultures merge and create mythologies to shape the way history is told. Drawing from a variety of religious and cultural traditions–including pre-Hispanic, Judeo-Christian, and Afro-Caribbean, Bermudez’s multimedia works explore the complexities of identity, history, and lived experience. This site-specific installation will feature two 8-foot tall painted crosses enveloped by a tangle of painted, cut paper forms embodying the spirit of nature. The imagery reflects the interplay between reality and the fantastical inherent to Bermudez’s work and artistic process.
Bermudez is an Afro-Venezuelan artist based in Philadelphia. He has traveled and exhibited extensively since the 1970s, especially throughout North and South America. Works by the artist can be found internationally in numerous public and private collections. In addition to being an artist, Bermudez is an educator, muralist, and curator. Bermudez is represented by Wexler Gallery.
