“Combat & Community: Care at the Crossroads of Community Mental Health and Military Experiences"
For the Cobb Institute Monthly show with BDO this May we celebrate Memorial Day and observe both Military Appreciation Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, discussing how trauma-informed care exists at the crossroads of these two aspects of life.
Trauma-informed mental health care emerged from recognizing how trauma and PTSD shapes mental health. It prioritizes safety, empowerment, and collaboration, shifting focus from "What's wrong with you?" to "What happened to you?" With a focus on healing and resilience, it has reshaped care systems and violence reduction initiatives to be more compassionate, responsive to lived experiences, and inviting participation by the whole community.
Our discussion team this month combines military experience with mental health expertise. Host Dr. Doris Browne served as a Colonel in the United States Army, Medical Corps, where she also led research initiatives. Trauma surgeon Dr. Mallory Williams served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and advocates for interventions to address violence and inequities in underserved communities. Dr. Rahn Bailey serves as the Chair of Psychiatry and is Assistant Dean of Community Engagement at Louisiana State University.
Join us on Thursday, 29th of May at 7pm ET on Facebook Live with BDO, audience questions will be invited.
